Shocking
A Ph.D. in oceanography does not prepare you for raising a child. Shocking, but true. When learning about geostrophy, I did not learn the best way to swaddle a child. When learning about Rossby waves, nobody told me what to do when your baby cries for hours on end. When preparing for my dissertation defense, I didn't read up on the best way to get your baby to go to sleep, change a diaper, or memorize good lullabies.
Some would say that "raising a baby isn't rocket science". Does that mean that a Ph.D. in rocket science is equally useless?
Somehow B is better at some of these things than I am. But he's an engineer and I guess a Ph.D. in engineering does prepare you somewhat for raising a child.
sigh
I'll get the hang of it sooner or later. It only took me a decade to get my Ph.D. How long could it take to figure out baby V?

Fussiness
Baby V gets fussy. She reaches octaves that I didn't know existed. We are still trying to figure out exactly the best way to soothe her when she gets like that. I've been singing my favorite spanish lullabies from when I was a little girl.
1. Los pollitos (the little chickens)
2. Duermete mi niña (sleep my child)
What lullabies worked for you? Any suggestions?

Woodland Park Zoo
We took baby V on her first "outing" that didn't involve a grocery store or a doctor's office. We went to the Woodland Park Zoo in Fremont/Phinney Ridge neighborhood. We first went to this zoo when I was trying to get labor going by walking alot. This park is so much fun. You have lots of interesting trails to walk along and there are excellent animals to see along the way. As far as zoos go, the habitats are really well-done. Usually I go to a zoo and feel bad for the animals. Here they've made an effort to make the animal habitats.... habitable. The animals may feel differently.
B and I decided to sign up for a membership. For only $80 (such a deal) we can go as many times as we want and bring up to five friends for half-price. Baby V is way too young to enjoy the animals, but we'll have fun taking her there for strolls. If anyone feels like a little zoo action just give us a call.
